Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI (opens in a new tab)

Software engineering is the process of automating tedious tasks. It is the process of replacing human labor with the faster, cheaper labor of the machine. In other words, it is the process of putting people out of work.

Six months ago, I would’ve called the author an “AI booster” and shrugged it off as bullshit. But then I gave AI an honest shot, and it helped me do a couple really neat things with my blog so quick and easy it felt like witchcraft.

A couple months later and I’ve built a custom, minimal publishing platform for my Hugo site that fits my needs specifically.

This isn’t something that took someone’s job, either. If I never touched AI, I would be using Micro.blog’s implementation of Hugo and I’d have been happy with that. I have enough fun tweaking the css and learning little snippets of JavaScript to add optional little features like a “scroll to top” button or a little gizmo that lets you copy the link to my post.

And best of all, I still get to use Micro.blog — so I’m not even cancelling my subscription to the old thing I used before.

I would never have hired a professional dev to design and deploy my personal blog. Mostly because I don’t have the money, but also because it’s not some big commercial project. It’s a thing I do when I’m bored at work, or when I just find an article I really like and want to share to a tiny audience.
